Shout Out Thursday: Angelas Paper Art

As part of my blog, Thursdays are for a SURPRISE "Shout Out" to another ETSY store for product information and a review, by me. These stores are ones that I have personally done business with and have been impressed with both their product and service. Today, lets chat about:

Pale Purple and White Hand Rolled Paper BeadsAngelas Paper Art, an ETSY shop specializing in paper beads, cards, paper quilling and keepsake boxes.  The owner and creator of this wonderful and creative shop is none other then....Angela, a native of Chicago with an interior design background and a talent for creating beautiful handmade paper based items.  I recently purchased the gorgeous beads pictured here at the right and they are beautiful!  I'm excited to utilize them in my jewelry designs and am sure you will find something in my store with these soon.  The beads came in a hand constructed envelope made from magazine pages which I thought was awesome.  I appreciate the repurposing and upcycling of items that goes into Angela's work and packaging as it is so important to try to be environmentally friendly today.  I was so impressed with my first purchase that I decided to go back for more....I am waiting for these pretty purple quilled flowers and sand colored beads to show up in my mailbox as I write this.

An Intimate Photo Shoot, Pregnancy 33 weeks 4 days

In a rare moment of self-disclosure (I'm leery about what I post in the online world), I have decided to share a few photos from my pregnancy photo shoot taken at 33 weeks & 4 days. Today, Wednesday April 20th (although I'm posting this a few hours early) is exactly 36 weeks and we are looking forward to meeting our little one very soon! My husband & I had a lot of fun working with the most talented and wonderful photographer on these, Cecilia DelViscio of Rhode Island.  She recorded our wedding at this same location in August 2009 and we had no doubt that she would do just as an amazing job this time around.  Thanks Cecilia!

And there you have it!  I am a very blessed woman with a wonderful husband and a very round baby belly!  That has "dropped."

In Love....with Origami Bouquets!

I am in love with making origami bouquets!  These are perfect for the destination bride, bride looking for a lasting alternative to fresh flowers, for your living room vase....the options are endless.  Here's a new one I posted today:

Erythromycin & Vitamin K, to Give or Not to Give?

Call me a skeptic, jaded, cynical…I think the medical field is full of unnecessary treatments that are driven more by insurance companies then by what is necessarily in our best interest.  Don’t get me wrong, modern medicine can be and is wonderful when accessed and provided appropriately.  However, somewhere along the line, we’ve turned into a pill popping, there’s a diagnosis for everything culture.
My point in all of this is that in a few short weeks I will be giving birth to my first child.  Within the first 24 hours of my newly born child’s life, there are a lot of “routine” medical tests and procedures that occur.  Certain obvious things are necessary and make sense to me, such as suctioning the baby’s nostrils out, clamping the cord & cutting it, performing the APGAR testing, vital & weight checks, cleaning up the baby, ect.  However, there are 3 things that I’m not so sure of and have received mixed information on when it comes to “medicine” that is given.  Shortly after my child is born, it is standard procedure to put erythromycin cream in the eyes to treat for any bacteria that may have been transferred from the vagina, especially STDs.  The baby also receives a Vitamin K injection to prevent unexpected bleeding that can be caused by low levels of the vitamin that helps with clotting.  Lastly, the baby is usually given its first dose of the Hepatitis B vaccination on its 2nd day of life.
I’m one to question everything and my maternal instincts are kicking in.  I want to know re: the 3 mentioned treatments are they truly necessary?  The answers I have received to my questions have varied from OB to midwife to doula to friend to what I’ve read.  I have decided that I will delay the Hepatitis B injection until the first appointment with my pediatrician, which is perfectly normal to do.  However, I’m not sure what to do with the erythromycin or Vitamin K.  My concern is that I do not want give my newborn child treatments that are not necessary, but I also do not want to not give something that could be needed.  Did I mention I don’t trust “standard procedures?”  I know I do not have any STDS and as a result there is a very low risk for any type of damaging bacterial eye infection for my child.  So should I still allow the erythromycin ointment?  I eat LOTS of strawberries which are packed with Vitamin K (I really like them, they’re one of my “cravings”) and am going to breastfeed.   Babies do build up Vitamin K levels with the initial colostrum milk from their mother and in the following weeks.  Is the Vitamin K necessary?
So what do you think?  If you are a parent, what did you do?

Thursday Shout Out: Wedding Season is Here...

Custom Origami and Pinwheel Bridal Set
Origami Bouquet & Pinwheel Boutonniere Set, $74
Thursdays are usually for a SUPRISE SHOUT OUT to another ETSY shop that I have done business with for product and service review.  This week I decided to break from the usual and give my shop, designs by Leah R. Hood a SHOUT OUT, something I have not done since starting this blog.

Spring is upon us and with spring comes wedding season, which per the linked CNN article starts Memorial Day weekend and carrys through September.  I have developed a true love for everything wedding; I was a do-it-yourself bride from the invites, programs, veil, to my own fresh floral arrangements, bouquets, & boutonnieres.  Weddings cost most of us a small fortunate, and I like to find unique and clever ways to not only help make these wonderful occasions more cost effective, but also add some unique personal touches.  Over the last year, I have been developing off-beat and alternative bouquets and boutonnieres for my store and today I would like to share some of the items that are currently for sale or that I have recently sold.  These are perfect for a more traditional wedding, destination wedding, pretty much ANY wedding!

To the left and below are pictures of a recent custom bridal party order in Lemon Meringue Pie for a destination wedding in Las Vegas.  The bride has a gorgeous 8 flower origami bouquet with pinwheel accents, and the party each has either a pinwheel bouquet or boutonniere.  I love the color as it will pop in photos, especially against the kelly green dresses of the bridal party!

Live Intentionally

Life is always full of the hussle and bussle, never a moment to spare or time to stop to just take a calming breath, never mind think or reflect.  Living in modern day USA has filled my life with ideas and concepts of what is normal and what I should do per societal standards; it's easy to lose who I truly am in the middle of all of this noise and pressure.

Today I'm taking a moment to stop and reflect as I write this post about who I truly am, what my core values and goals are in life, and to see where I'm missing the mark.  I believe that I need to live my life intentionally not just in a busy chaos dictated by circumstances.  Today I'd like to encourage my readers to take a quiet moment to reflect, pray, recenter.  What does living intentionally mean to you?  Do you also feel it is important?

There is a verse in the Bible that means a lot to me that helps me to stay balanced.  I'd like to share it here, Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

You'll find the same verse in my shop.  I wish everyone a day full of peace of mind and heart.  And just for kicks, here's a picture of my 2 loves.....

Two individuals who help me keep my focus in life, my wonderful husband & our girl Bailey!
